LD272 An Act to reduce Teenage Cancer Risk

We were honored to share Andrew’s story at the Maine legislature last week in support of a bill supporting the ban on tanning beds for teenagers under the age of 18. We were joined by doctors and melanoma survivors in our testimony. We urged the State to pass this ban because the best way to beat melanoma is to prevent it in the first place. Please encourage your representatives to support this bill. Thank you! Craig and Ginny

7th Annual Teddy Bear Drive

In Support of Samantha Burns and in Loving Memory of Jill Carboni and Andy Marsh

The Teddy Bear Drive originated in 2006 to honor the first anniversary of my younger sister Jill’s death. With her huge heart, Jill made a difference in all the lives she touched. On November 27, 2005, Jill lost her life in a tragic car accident while returning to Marist College in New York. In 2007 I began donating teddy bears in support of my dear friend, Andy Marsh as he bravely battled melanoma. With remarkable faith and perseverance, Andy fought for over two years. He tragically lost his battle with cancer on August 4, 2009.

Last year my student, Samantha Burns was diagnosed with leukemia. She continues to face intense treatment with courage, strength and grace. She is a shining example of resilience, spirit and determination. Watching Samantha selflessly deliver teddy bears to other children on the oncology floor at Children’s Hospital Boston was an indescribable experience.

Jill, Andy and Samantha have demonstrated a dedication to helping others with love and compassion. Their contagious kindness inspires everyone to treat each other with care and sincerity.

When the Teddy Bear Drive first began, stuffed animals were donated to children who had lost a loved one and were participating in THE CIRCLE within the Good Grief Program at Boston Medical Center.

The astounding generosity of extended family and friends enabled me to expand the drive, which now benefits children in hospitals, schools and shelters across New England. Throughout the past six years over 5000 stuffed animals have been donated to children in need!

This year my goal is to help children affected by Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey and New York. Please contact me if you know of a shelter, hospital, school or organization that would benefit from receiving teddy bears in these areas of widespread devastation.

My overall intention is to support and honor Samantha as she undergoes her challenging journey to recovery. My hope is to keep Jill and Andy’s spirits and memories alive by carrying on the efforts they initiated to make the world a better place. Thank you for your overwhelming and continued support!

With love and gratitude,

Melissa Carboni

To Benefit Children Affected by Hurricane Sandy New stuffed animals may be donated until Sunday, December 9th.Give a HUG to a child in need
